In response to mounting complaints and recent discussions in the National Assembly, the Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has expressed deep concern over the unprofessional behavior exhibited by some police officers patrolling Nigeria’s major highways.IGP

The reported incidents of extortion, intimidation, and harassment of commuters have cast a shadow on the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. The IGP is taking these allegations seriously and is committed to promptly addressing the issue. He has issued directives to supervising officers to maintain vigilant oversight of their subordinates while in the field. The goal is to eliminate any unprofessional conduct and ensure that officers uphold the highest standards of behavior. If any misconduct is identified, supervising officers are expected to take swift action to rectify the situation.IGP
Recognizing the need for a comprehensive solution, the Nigeria Police Force on the orders of the IGP, has launched extensive training and retraining programs. These programs are designed to instill a sense of civility and professionalism among officers, fostering positive behavioral changes. The IGP believes that continuous education on ethical standards will strengthen the relationship between the police and the public they serve.IGP
To enforce accountability, the Monitoring Unit and other Disciplinary Units have been instructed to intensify their efforts in identifying officers engaged in misconduct. Strict disciplinary measures will be imposed on personnel found guilty of such offenses, serving as a deterrent for future transgressions. Additionally, supervisory officers who neglect their duty of oversight will face appropriate consequences.IGP
