In a powerful display of collaboration, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, lauded the seamless synergy between their agencies during a joint operation at the Tincan Seaport in Lagos on Thursday, January 25, 2024.
Representatives of the NDLEA and Customs gathered to witness the handover of illicit drugs seized during a meticulous examination of containers. The operation was fueled by credible intelligence received from international partners, underscoring the global effort to combat the criminal drug trade.
Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort, stating that the handing over of seized illicit drugs by the Nigeria Customs Service speaks volumes about the dedication of security agencies securing the nation. He emphasized that the sea ports, like the airports, are now fortified against criminal elements.
Marwa stressed the significance of the cooperation between NDLEA and Customs, sending a clear message to drug cartels that Nigeria’s ports will not be a sanctuary for their illicit activities. He commended the officers and men of both agencies for their vigilance, acknowledging the crucial role played by international intelligence that triggered the operation.
The NDLEA Chairman praised the Tin Can Command and other units involved in tracking the movement of containers from the port of loading. He assured the public that NDLEA, Nigeria Customs, and other security organizations remain unwavering in their commitment to safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
In response, Customs CG Bashir Adeniyi highlighted the effectiveness of strategic partnerships in countering criminal activities. He outlined the deliberate focus of the Nigeria Customs Service on collaboration over the past seven months, emphasizing the advantages of working collectively to fulfill statutory responsibilities.
The items seized during the operation included 65 packets of Colorado cannabis, 17 parcels of cocaine, 151 parcels of Colorado, precursor chemicals, 40 packets of cocaine, 1026 packets of Colorado, and 226 packets of Colorado—all imported from Canada and South Africa.
The collaborative efforts between NDLEA and Customs showcased the power of pooling resources and intelligence, reinforcing the commitment of both agencies to safeguarding the nation’s borders and protecting its citizens from the threats posed by illegal substances.
