Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have made significant strides in dismantling a notorious criminal organization specializing in illicit drug trafficking across multiple continents. Following the recent seizure of the largest consignment of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, three key members of the organization have been apprehended after over two months of pursuit.
The operation, which commenced on February 10th, 2024, at the SAHCO Import Shed of the airport’s Cargo Terminal, resulted in the recovery of 51.90 kilograms of heroin from the drug cartel. The illicit substance was ingeniously concealed within 15 cartons of 2300-watt metal cutting machines. Out of this, 49.70kg was found within the equipment, with an additional 2.2kg seized at the syndicate’s warehouse in the Ayobo area of Lagos.
The Agency’s efforts didn’t stop there. Following the arrests, NDLEA secured an interim forfeiture court order on various assets, including hotels, mansions, vehicles, and funds traced to the syndicate members. A manhunt was launched for those who evaded capture, resulting in a breakthrough on Friday, April 19th. Two wanted kingpins, Onyinyechi Irene Igbokwuputa and Frankline Uzochukwu, were arrested in Lagos and Awka, Anambra state, respectively. Another wanted member, Osita Emmanuel Obinna, was also nabbed in Lagos.
In a separate incident at the Lagos airport, NDLEA officers foiled an attempt by a suspect, Iheakara Ifeanyichukwu Festus, to export a drug consignment to Muscat, Oman. On April 18th, 2024, the suspect’s luggage was found to contain 20 large parcels of cannabis weighing 9.80kg. Festus, who resides in Muscat, Oman, confessed to being hired as a courier for the drug, with an agreement to be paid N1,200,000 upon successful delivery in Oman.
The NDLEA’s vigilance extended to Adamawa state, where operatives intercepted a Peugeot car driven by Dahiru Mohammed on April 20th, 2024. The vehicle was found to be carrying 1,250,000 pills of opioids weighing 450kg. In another operation along the Ngurore-Yola road, a J5 bus loaded with motor spare parts was intercepted, revealing hidden consignments of Codeine Syrup and Tramadol. This led to the arrest of the recipient, Jairus Nwanchor, at Jambutu motor park.
Further arrests were made across different states. In Bayelsa state, three suspects—Beriakuma Vivian Chinrdu, Okpor Isaac, and Daniel Onyeachom—were apprehended in connection with the seizure of 69 compressed blocks of cannabis weighing 36kg. Meanwhile, in Imo state, Kingsley Omeje was arrested in Owerri while taking delivery of 49 bottles of codeine syrup.
In Ondo state, NDLEA operatives raided the Oloro camp in Akure North LGA, arresting Linus Odogwu and destroying 25,000 kilograms of cannabis on a 10-hectare farmland. Additionally, they recovered 89.5kg of the same substance. Three other suspects—David Obungete Ekepenyoung, Oluwaseun Folorunso, and Rabiu Musa—were also nabbed in various parts of the state in connection with different seizures totaling 77kg.
In a concerted effort to combat drug abuse, NDLEA Commands across the country intensified their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy lectures. These included sensitization lectures at schools, markets, and religious institutions across various states.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the officers and men of the MMIA, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Ondo, and Imo Commands for their diligent efforts. He also applauded all NDLEA counterparts across the country for their dedication to intensifying WADA advocacy lectures, emphasizing the importance of balancing drug supply reduction with drug demand reduction activities.
