Former Ogun Governor, Gbenga Daniel Clarifies Compass Newspaper Founding

Former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has clarified the rationale behind founding The Compass newspaper, denying it was intended to challenge Senator Bola Tinubu.

In an interview with a national newspaper, Daniel addressed these misconceptions and emphasized the developmental strides made during his administration, many of which were underreported.

Reflecting on the media environment of his tenure, he remarked, “I succeeded a newspaper mogul, Chief Olusegun Osoba, and the media sympathy was with my predecessor. People expected me to fail within weeks.”

Facing continuous negative press, Daniel felt the need to establish a media outlet to document and publicize his administration’s achievements accurately.

“The Compass was created not for political vendetta but to counteract biased media coverage,” he explained. “We needed a platform to record our work. We accomplished many things that remain unknown.”

Daniel lamented the absence of social media during his time, which would have enabled direct communication with the public, bypassing traditional media channels.

“Without social media, once the press blocked us, we had no voice,” he said. “Despite working around the clock, the narrative was that we weren’t working because the media blocked our achievements.”

He highlighted significant projects under his administration, such as securing approvals for a cargo airport and establishing three free trade zones—the Olokola, Kajola Transportation, and Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zones. These were aimed at fostering industrialization and economic growth.

Daniel also underscored the establishment of numerous educational institutions, transforming the state’s educational landscape. These included Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Gateway Polytechnic, Tai Solarin University of Education, and several others.

“In our administration, we established about seven tertiary institutions and campuses, transforming education in the state,” he noted.

Moreover, he pointed out the development of the Sagamu Interchange area into a major industrial hub, attracting companies like Nestle, Coleman Cables, CTK, and the largest international breweries, making it the fastest-growing industrial zone in the country.

Humorously addressing the media, Daniel added, “There’s so much you chose not to report about our achievements.”
