The Advocates For Children And Vulnerable Persons Network (ACVPN) has raised serious concerns over the alleged abuse of power by Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP) Hope Okofor and Bassey Ewa, both stationed at Force Headquarters, Abuja. This follows the harsh treatment meted out to Inspector Opeyemi Amoo, who has faced severe punishment and psychological trauma due to controversial decisions by her former superiors, CSP Ekinde and DSP Felicia Akinpelu.
On October 26, 2023, a grievous case of child defilement was reported to the Family Support Unit (FSU) of Igando Police Station by Mrs. Ajike Bolanle Agnes, acting on behalf of the child’s biological mother living in the United States. The child, who was eight years old at the time of the abuse in 2019, was now 12 and had been allegedly defiled by her stepfather, Kingsley Agunbiade.
Following his arrest, Agunbiade was detained with plans to charge him the following Monday. However, the process was delayed due to court inaction. Subsequently, the DPO released Agunbiade for medical treatment, allegedly without informing the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Inspector Opeyemi Amoo. Since his release, both Agunbiade and his surety have absconded.
Determined to secure justice, Inspector Amoo employed a tracker, leading to the surety’s arrest and subsequent court charge on March 7, 2024. The trial was set for May 6, 2024. However, dissatisfied with the handling of the case, the complainant escalated the issue to the SCID Panti D10, resulting in Inspector Amoo being summoned to Force Headquarters in Abuja by the Provost Office.
On May 22, 2023, Inspector Amoo was detained for ten days by DCP Hope Okofor and has since faced an orderly room trial, with threats of dismissal or rank reduction. This harsh treatment has been particularly disheartening given Inspector Amoo’s exemplary record in handling cases involving children and family matters, especially those pertaining to sexual and gender-based violence.
ACVPN has called into question the motives behind the actions of DCP Hope Okofor and DCP Bassey Ewa. Allegations have surfaced that the complainant has been living in DCP Ewa’s apartment, raising serious concerns about the impartiality and integrity of the investigation and subsequent treatment of Inspector Amoo.
Suspected Minor Abuser
Jennifer Nwosu, Case Manager for ACVPN, stated, “We stand firmly against this injustice and call for an immediate review of the actions taken against Inspector Opeyemi Amoo. The Police Service Commission must ensure a fair and transparent investigation into this matter to protect the rights and career of a dedicated officer.”
The ACVPN has committed to monitoring the situation closely and advocating for justice. They have appealed to relevant authorities to intervene to prevent the unjust persecution of a committed officer, stressing the need to uphold the principles of fairness and justice within the police force.
The case underscores the urgent need for systemic reforms to protect those who serve with integrity and ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
ACVPN urges the Police Service Commission to investigate the conduct of DCP Hope Okofor and DCP Bassey Ewa thoroughly. They also call on civil society, media, and concerned citizens to rally behind Inspector Amoo, ensuring her dedication and service are acknowledged and protected from undue influence and retaliation.
