The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it has received letters of intent from no fewer than 110 associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

This disclosure was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during the commission’s second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives in Abuja on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Professor Yakubu emphasized that all applications are being processed in strict compliance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act. While reiterating the Commission’s unwavering commitment to transparency, he dismissed insinuations of bias or compromise, stating that INEC remains independent and fair in its dealings.INEC

“So far, the Commission has acknowledged all the applications except six recent ones that will be processed before the end of the week,” Yakubu noted. He added that the full list of applying associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and the identities of their pro-tem chairmen and secretaries, will soon be published.

In a major update on upcoming electoral activities, the INEC Chairman announced that the Anambra State Governorship Election will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Campaigns commenced on June 11 and are scheduled to end at midnight on November 6, in accordance with the electoral timetable.

Additionally, Yakubu stated that political party primaries for the Area Council Election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are ongoing and will conclude on June 30, 2025. The elections, he said, will cover 68 constituencies within the FCT.
