In a decisive response to a recent surge in cult-related activities, kidnappings, and armed robberies in Sapele, Oghara, and surrounding areas, Delta State Police Commissioner Olufemi Abaniwonda has launched a targeted operation to curb the rising criminal activities.
On July 18, 2024, at approximately 09:30 AM, a covert intelligence-led operation was executed by a special police team under the leadership of ASP Julius Robinson. The team, working in conjunction with the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Oghara and Sapele, raided three syndicates of suspected cultists and armed robbers at different locations in Oghara Town, Ethiope East Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State.
The operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects: Ochuko Joel Ofoye, 35, from Jeddo Community in Okpe LGA, identified as a member of the Juris Confraternity. Michael Anwul, 29, from Alisimie Community in Ika South LGA, also a Juris Confraternity member and the custodian of arms. Police recovered two AK-47 magazines and 29 rounds of live ammunition from him. Great Ojareri, 35, from Oghareki Community in Ethiope West LGA, linked to the Eiye Confraternity and a known custodian of arms. Innocent Esefeta, 31, from Efisere Community in Ughelli North LGA, residing behind Ibori Road, Oghara, found to be the owner of a recovered Beretta pistol.
Ogaga Ebuke, 27, from Okpe Community in Orerokpe LGA, residing on Western Delta Road in Oghara, associated with the Juris Confraternity, from whom a locally made pistol and one live cartridge were seized, concealed in a shoe at his residence. All suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue to unravel the full extent of their criminal activities and affiliations.
