The former chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area, Wale Adedayo, has been arraigned in an Abeokuta magistrate court, facing two charges related to alleged false allegations against Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Adedayo appeared before Justice A.K. Araba on Tuesday, facing charges of unlawful publication and making false allegations of fund diversion by the Governor. According to prosecutor Adeyemi Olukoya, these charges are in violation of sections 59(1) and 375 of Ogun State’s criminal code laws.
The charges revolve around Adedayo’s alleged distribution of a circular publicly accusing Governor Abiodun of hijacking local government funds, a claim he knew to be false.
The circular, addressed to former Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, accused the Governor of diverting funds meant for local governments, causing public alarm.
During the hearing, Adedayo pleaded not guilty to the charges. Subsequently, Justice Araba granted him bail, setting it at N2 million, with the requirement of two responsible sureties within the court’s jurisdiction who possess tax-clear land property. The case is scheduled for further hearing on October 20, 2023.
Adedayo’s arrest came after he announced it on his Facebook page, stating that he was being taken to the Ogun State Police CID at Eleweran, Abeokuta, due to a petition against him by the State Government. The controversy began when Adedayo, in a letter dated August 29, 2023, addressed to former Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, accused Governor Abiodun of diverting the statutory Federal Allocation meant for the state’s Local Governments over the past two years. He also alleged the diversion of over N10.8 billion from the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme.
In response, Governor Abiodun, on August 30, 2023, vehemently denied these allegations. He asserted that his administration had increased funds allocated to local governments to help them fulfill their obligations, countering Adedayo’s claims of fund diversion.
The legal battle now unfolds as both parties stand their ground, with the court set to determine the truth behind these accusations.
