The Union DICON Salt (UDS), once a household name and the foremost iodized salt brand in Nigeria, has been officially relaunched after two decades of dormancy.

The highly anticipated event took place on Monday, 4 August 2025, at the Kirikiri Light Terminal Phase II, Apapa, Lagos.

Chairman of UDS, General TY Danjuma GCON (rtd), was represented at the relaunch by Major General BI Alaya, Director General of the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

In his address, the DG revealed that Gen Danjuma had personally directed the reactivation and expansion of UDS to restore it to its former leadership position in the Nigerian salt industry.

“This factory’s revival represents resilience, vision, and an undying commitment to Nigeria’s industrial strength,” said Maj Gen Alaya. He also encouraged staff to embrace hard work and assured them of continued leadership support.UDS

In a touching speech, Acting Managing Director Barrister Florence Iroye traced UDS’s journey, including its public listing and the production shutdown in 2004. She described the relaunch as a dream come true, made possible by the support of the Board, shareholders, and Ministry of Defense stakeholders.

Following the formal commissioning of the newly refurbished facility, guests toured the raw materials warehouse, production lines, and laboratory. Observers were visibly impressed by the cleanliness and modern infrastructure on display.

The relaunch ceremony culminated in a heartfelt hall event where board member Mr Illiya Sakaba likened UDS’s revival to “a dead man brought back to life” by the relentless work of the management and the foresight of Gen TY Danjuma.UDS

Attendees included board members, shareholders, external solicitors, contractors, consultants, and DICON liaison officers.
