The Headquarters, 63 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, has clarified that the death of a suspected criminal in Warri, Delta State, resulted from a self-defense encounter between a soldier and a violent group attempting to gain unauthorized access into the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate.
According to a statement signed by Captain Iliyadu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, the confrontation occurred on October 13, 2025, when a soldier on duty at the DMLT Estate gate halted several individuals who tried to force their way into the premises without undergoing routine security checks.
The suspects allegedly became unruly and violent when questioned about their intentions and identities. The situation degenerated into a physical struggle, during which the soldier, acting in self-defense, employed combat skills that left one of the suspects injured.
The wounded man was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The incident was promptly reported to the Otu-Jeremi Police Division in Delta State for further investigation.
Captain Bawa-Rijau reiterated the Army’s commitment to upholding human rights while discharging its duties, urging residents to remain law-abiding and comply with standard security procedures.
“Respect for the fundamental human rights of the citizenry has always been prioritized while discharging statutory responsibilities in Delta State,” the statement emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has announced fresh operational successes in its ongoing counterterrorism campaign in Taraba State under Operation LAFIYA NAKOWA.
Troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), acting on credible intelligence, conducted a clearance operation on October 14, 2025, targeting suspected terrorist hideouts around Badekoshi, Fajul, Kurmi, and Dampar villages in Ibi Local Government Area.
During the operation, troops engaged the terrorists in Badekoshi, forcing them to flee toward the forested area of Fajul. Following a tactical pursuit and area exploitation, the soldiers recovered several items including one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, rounds of ammunition, two camouflage uniforms, fragmental jackets, and a stolen Jincheng motorcycle believed to have been used in previous attacks.
Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, lauded the troops for their bravery and professionalism, urging them to sustain the momentum until all criminal elements are neutralized.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, promising continued collaboration with security agencies and local communities to maintain peace across the country.
