The Nigerian authorities have been urged to conduct an impartial and transparent investigation into alarming threats against Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff and her lawyer, Abba Hikima, as their controversial trial unfolds. The Sokoto State Government is prosecuting Shariff on charges of “use of insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance” following her criticism of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
The case has drawn widespread condemnation, with Amnesty International Nigeria describing it as a troubling attack on free expression. “Hamdiyya and her lawyer are facing persecution for exercising their fundamental rights. The threats, including phone calls, in-person confrontations by individuals claiming to be ‘intelligence agents,’ and stalking, are deeply alarming,” said Isa Sanusi, the organization’s director.
At the last hearing, Barrister Hikima requested armed police protection due to hostility in the courtroom, an application the court approved. The threats extended beyond the courtroom, as the duo reported being stalked at their hotel and accosted by unknown individuals.

“These threats, actions represent an abuse of power and a calculated attempt to silence critics and intimidate their defenders,” Sanusi said. “The hostility and threats faced by Hamdiyya and her lawyer has made attending court a dangerous endeavor.”
The intimidation escalated when Shariff was abducted on November 13, 2024. Armed men attacked her while she was retrieving her phone from a charging point, beat her, and threw her from a moving tricycle, leaving her with severe injuries.
Sanusi called on Nigerian authorities to prioritize the safety of Shariff and Hikima, particularly during court appearances and their stay in Sokoto. He also criticized the Sokoto State Government for its intolerance of dissent, labeling it “unacceptable in a free society.”
“No one should face persecution for expressing an opinion contrary to the government’s stance,” Sanusi stated. “The Nigerian government must ensure that justice prevails and that Sokoto’s resources are directed toward addressing pressing issues like insecurity, which has plagued the eastern part of the state.”
The trial has also cast a spotlight on the deteriorating security situation in Sokoto. Amnesty International highlighted the daily atrocities in the eastern part of the state, where gunmen have killed residents, burned villages, and abducted women and girls.
The case has sparked intense public and media scrutiny. Advocacy platforms like Fasnewsng.com have called for increased awareness and action to protect free speech and human rights in Nigeria.
