It was an emotional afternoon in Asaba on Tuesday, 12 August 2025, as the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, stood before a gathering of grieving families, mothers clutching framed photographs, children holding hands tightly, widows wiping silent tears.
One by one, he handed over cheques worth ₦37,663,936 to 35 families of officers who had died while serving their country.
The air was heavy with both sorrow and relief. These cheques, presented on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, under the IGP Family Welfare Scheme and Group Life Assurance, were more than just financial aid, they were a solemn promise that the sacrifices made by these officers would not be forgotten.
CP Abaniwonda’s words were steady but filled with compassion. He reminded the families that the Nigeria Police Force values their loved ones’ service, even in death, and that the welfare of both serving and late officers’ families remains a priority.
Among those who received the support was Miss Chidinma Paul. Her father, she said, had served the Force with pride until his final day. Fighting back tears, she expressed deep gratitude to the IGP, assuring that the funds would be used wisely to support her family’s future.
For some families, the cheques meant school fees paid, hospital bills settled, and food on the table again. For others, it was simply the comfort of knowing that their loved one’s badge still meant something, that their service still echoed in the halls of the Force they had so loyally served.
It was a day that blended grief and gratitude, a reminder that while the uniform may be folded away and the boots laid to rest, the legacy of service lives on.
