In a significant development for Ogun State, the Executive Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has issued and presented the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operational Base in Abigi, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
This move is expected to accelerate the commencement of construction on the site, with funding of up to N2 billion secured in the 2024 Appropriation, thanks to the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The site, originally donated by the local community through traditional rulers for Navy Hydrographic purposes, had seen little activity over the years. However, the project gained renewed momentum with the emergence of Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy. Under his leadership, the project has expanded in scope, with the aim of bolstering Nigeria’s maritime security.
Senator Daniel expressed his gratitude to Governor Abiodun for the prompt issuance of the C of O, emphasizing that the document was crucial for initiating construction. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of traditional rulers in Ogun Waterside, particularly His Royal Majesty, Oba S.K. Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland. The traditional leaders had been instrumental in advocating for the project, allaying fears that it might be relocated to another state.
The Senator further praised the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and his team for their dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime assets and their partnership in bringing the project to fruition. He also highlighted the importance of President Tinubu’s support in securing the nation’s territorial waters and ensuring the project’s realization.
