The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Southeast Nigeria, calling for immediate reforms to address misconduct by security agencies and escalating violence in the region.

This was the focus of a press conference held by RULAAC as the organization reviewed the year’s activities and highlighted key challenges ahead of the festive season.
RULAAC expressed concerns over the recurring harassment, extortion, and brutality faced by travelers at security checkpoints, particularly during the Christmas period when many journey home to celebrate with their families. These checkpoints, originally intended to safeguard travelers, have become sources of distress due to unprofessional conduct by security operatives.RULAAC
“Security agencies must implement measures to ensure their personnel operate professionally and respectfully,” said RULAAC Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma. “These checkpoints should protect, not torment, travelers.”
The press conference also addressed broader security issues, including rising violence, communal tensions, and human rights violations in the Southeast. RULAAC decried the extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and forced disappearances occurring under the guise of maintaining order.
Particular attention was drawn to reprisal attacks by security forces, which have devastated communities by causing fatalities, displacing residents, and destroying livelihoods. “These actions amount to collective punishment and only perpetuate a cycle of violence,” Nwanguma added.RULAAC
RULAAC outlined several urgent measures to address the region’s challenges:
Political Leadership: A revolution in leadership is needed to prioritize the welfare of the people over corruption and self-interest.
Security Sector Reform: Ensure security forces are professional, accountable, and trained in human rights approaches.
Inclusive Dialogue: Engage community leaders, youth organizations, and civil society to address grievances and promote peaceful resolutions.

Economic Development: Invest in job creation, infrastructure, and social services to tackle the root causes of unrest.
Media Freedom: Protect journalists and foster public discourse to enhance transparency and accountability.
If these reforms are implemented, RULAAC envisions reduced violence, stronger civic participation, and economic growth in the Southeast. Failure to act, however, risks deepening instability and eroding public trust in institutions.
“We call on Southeast State Governors to lead these efforts in collaboration with community stakeholders,” Nwanguma urged. “This is essential to restoring peace, fostering inclusive governance, and securing a brighter future for the region.”
RULAAC
RULAAC concluded the conference with a message of hope and goodwill, wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
