Over 200 pupils from 26 public and private schools gathered at Makogi Primary School in Ogun State for the inaugural edition of the Ultimate Mind Challenge, a day-long celebration of intellect, creativity, and social vision. Organised by the REEL Foundation and the Dolly Children Foundation.
Proudly supported by the Britain Nigeria Educational Trust (BNET) as well as UAC Foods, makers of Gala and Supreme Ice Cream, the event blended competition with character-building in an effort to elevate academic performance and civic consciousness among primary school pupils in Makogi, Magboro.
The event featured three major competitions, Spelling Bee, Chess, and Scrabble, in which pupils showcased sharp thinking, strategy, and linguistic flair. After several tightly contested rounds, 15 winners emerged. In the Grade 4 Spelling Bee, Esther Olatunde of NESGEL School took first place.
Followed by Mark Solanke and Ese Ochuko of King’s Heart School. Paula Ohia of All Precious Worth School clinched the Grade 5 title, while her schoolmate Olamide Ojo and Amidat Olukotun of Mark Favour Montessori placed second and third, respectively. Joseph Olatunde of NESGEL School was crowned Chess Champion, and the Scrabble champions were Victor Azubuzor and Fatimah Kalejaye of Marshal School.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Ajoke Adeola of REEL Foundation inspired attendees with a powerful message:
“Today, we are not just organising a competition; we are planting seeds of courage, intellect, and community. These children are our future problem-solvers. With encouragement and opportunity, their brilliance will shine.”
A standout moment was the “Commitment Wall”, where children wrote the societal problems they hope to solve in the future. Their responses revealed deep awareness and empathy, ranging from fixing bad roads and ending insecurity to ensuring free education, caring for widows, and fighting hunger.
The event drew accolades from educators and government officials. Mr. Benjamin A. Sorunke from the Ogun State Ministry of Education described it as “a nurturing and transformative platform for young learners,” while Mrs. Ogunmodede from the Ministry in Abeokuta added, “I left the event having learned new words myself, it was enriching for both students and adults.” Community leader Alhaja Lamidi praised the program’s inclusive spirit, which brought together children from diverse schools and backgrounds.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Adedolapo Osuntuyi, founder of Dolly Children Foundation, emphasised the larger mission: “This event is about far more than who won today, it’s about shaping thoughtful, resilient, and compassionate leaders for tomorrow.”
With the successful debut of the Ultimate Mind Challenge 2025, the REEL Foundation and Dolly Children Foundation have set the stage for more transformative educational interventions across local communities. This initiative signals a growing movement to invest in Nigeria’s future by equipping children not only with knowledge, but with purpose.
