Polaris Bank, in collaboration with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), has launched a major tree-planting initiative in Rivers State as part of its commitment to fighting carbon emissions and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
The exercise took place at Bodo City Girls Secondary School in Gokana Local Government Area, where 500 fruit-bearing trees are being planted to restore degraded ecosystems, improve food security, and raise climate awareness among young people.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Raphael Abiaziem, Divisional Head for South-South, represented by Mr. Ejike Aroh, Business Development Manager of Garrison Branch, emphasized that the initiative is central to Polaris Bank’s sustainability agenda.
“This project is not just about planting trees; it is about safeguarding our environment, reducing carbon footprint, and raising awareness on climate action,” Abiaziem said. “By planting fruit-bearing and economic trees, we are helping communities build resilience, improve food security, and restore degraded ecosystems.”
The NCF commended Polaris Bank for its leadership in advancing climate action. According to Mr. Alex Jorbedom, NCF Field Officer, the choice of trees such as avocado and native pear will provide multiple benefits, including shade, windbreaks, edible produce, and protection against soil erosion. “Each tree has been planted with protective mesh, and we will return to conduct more awareness campaigns so students can value and care for them,” Jorbedom added.
Polaris Bank’s broader sustainability roadmap places climate action and community development at the heart of its growth strategy. Through collaborations such as this, the Bank is reinforcing its role as a driver of environmental responsibility and social impact across Nigeria.
