The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Abiodun Mustapha Alamutu, has unveiled the Inspector-General of Police Safe Schools Initiative and inaugurated the “Schools Protection Squad” (SPS) to safeguard educational institutions across the state.
The launch, held at the Ogun State Police command headquarters, emphasized a proactive and collaborative approach to ensuring the safety of students, educators, and school environments.
Speaking at the event, CP Abiodun Alamutu described the initiative as a crucial step in protecting schools, which he referred to as “sanctuaries of knowledge” and “nurturing grounds for future leaders.” He highlighted the recent surge in school-related violence and emphasized the need for a collective effort to address these challenges.
“Education is the foundation of our society, a catalyst for progress where thoughts are conceived, ideas are exchanged, and dreams are nurtured. This sacred space must be protected against threats that can disrupt learning, instill fear, or endanger lives,” Alamutu stated.
Key Features of the Initiative
The Schools Protection Squad comprises a dedicated team of trained personnel tasked with:
Conducting regular patrols around schools.
Facilitating workshops on personal safety for students.
Engaging parents and educators to establish open communication channels.
Utilizing modern technology and intelligence-led policing to preempt security threats.
The squad will also work closely with Ogun State educational authorities to conduct comprehensive risk assessments and implement preventive measures tailored to each institution. Educators and administrators will receive specialized training to recognize and respond to potential security risks.
Community Involvement is Key
CP Alamutu called on all stakeholders, including parents, educators, and community members, to join hands in supporting the initiative. He urged parents to remain vigilant, educators to foster open dialogues about safety, and community members to champion the cause of securing schools.
“The safety of our children in Ogun State schools is intertwined with the security of our communities. When our schools are safe havens, the entire community benefits. Safe schools breed productive citizens who contribute positively to society,” he noted.
A Shared Responsibility
Fasnewsng.com reports that the Commissioner emphasized the importance of viewing safety as a shared responsibility, not solely the duty of law enforcement. He expressed optimism that the initiative would create a secure environment where learning can flourish without fear.
The launch of the Safe Schools Initiative and the Schools Protection Squad represents a landmark moment in Ogun State’s efforts to address school safety. It reflects a broader commitment to building resilient communities and ensuring the well-being of future generations.
