The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has categorically denied allegations of partisanship in the recently concluded Rivers State Local Government elections, following widespread misinformation regarding its involvement.
In an official statement, the NPF clarified that its actions were strictly in line with legal judgments and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining neutrality in political matters across the country.
The controversy stems from conflicting court rulings regarding the Police’s role in the election. On July 19, 2024, the Federal High Court issued an order barring the Police from participating in the local government elections, a ruling that was later countered by the Rivers State High Court on September 4, 2024. The state court directed federal security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, to provide security during the elections. However, the Federal High Court nullified all previous election activities on September 30, 2024, and once again ordered the Police to refrain from providing security during the election.

In light of these conflicting rulings, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, referred the matter to the Force Legal Section, which advised adherence to the Federal High Court’s ruling. The IGP subsequently instructed the Rivers State Police Command to comply with the court’s judgment and communicated this decision to the Governor of Rivers State, advising him to follow the same legal directive for the sake of peace and stability in the state.
The NPF also condemned the recent accusations made by the Rivers State Governor, describing the governor’s outburst as baseless and uncalled for. The NPF emphasized that it does not engage in political affiliations and remains focused on upholding law and order. The statement further highlighted IGP Egbetokun’s impeccable track record, both within Nigeria and internationally, where he serves as the Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO).
To maintain peace and ensure the functioning of democratic institutions, the IGP directed the immediate unsealing of all Local Government Council Secretariats in Rivers State, which were previously sealed due to tensions over the control of the secretariats. Despite this move, violent confrontations erupted, leading to the destruction of government property. The IGP has tasked the Rivers State Commissioner of Police with restoring order in the affected areas.
The NPF remains resolute in its mission to foster peace, uphold democratic principles, and maintain law and order across Nigeria, as reiterated in the statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
