In a warm diplomatic embrace that bridged the Atlantic, Nigeria and Brazil renewed their long-standing friendship and strategic cooperation at the 2nd Vice Presidential Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM), which officially commenced on Monday, June 23, 2025, in Abuja.

Hosting the historic session was Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, who welcomed the high-powered Brazilian delegation led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. This dialogue marked a significant milestone in a relationship that dates back to the 1960s, a rekindling of brotherly ties that have weathered the storms of political change, global economic shifts, and evolving international dynamics.

“This event marks another epoch in the bilateral relations of our two countries,” Ambassador Tuggar declared in his opening address, “and our shared commitment to strengthening cooperation and broadening mutual understanding through people-to-people exchange and deeper private sector engagement.”

The SDM, first initiated in Brasília in 2013, has become a cornerstone framework for aligning Nigeria and Brazil’s development agendas. Tuggar underscored the forum’s renewed relevance, especially in today’s interconnected world, where South-South partnerships are increasingly shaping the global narrative.Nigeria

As delegates gathered in Abuja’s diplomatic quarters, discussions centered on six key pillars: Trade and Investment, Agriculture, Defence and Intelligence Cooperation, Culture and Health, Energy and Climate Change, and Foreign Relations. The Honourable Minister highlighted the visible impact of the SDM with projects like the Green Imperative, a joint agricultural mechanization initiative that is already transforming rural livelihoods across Nigeria.

Ambassador Tuggar’s remarks also carried a note of reverence and historical reflection. He paid tribute to diplomatic icons such as Brazil’s Ambassador Paulo Tarso Flecha de Lima and Nigeria’s Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, who were instrumental in laying the foundations of bilateral trust and collaboration.

The atmosphere of mutual respect was heightened when Tuggar introduced Vice President Geraldo Alckmin as “a man whose place in history is already assured.” Drawing a compelling parallel with Nigeria’s own Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tuggar emphasized the uncommon bond between two nations whose leaders are former governors and seasoned statesmen, now steering their countries toward shared progress.

“With every counter-trade agreement, every joint initiative during economic trials, our nations have found ways to offer each other hope and results,” Tuggar noted. “Another boom period in the Atlantic world is in the offing, and Nigeria and Brazil bestride it.”
