In a decisive move to amplify the global fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (US-DEA) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral collaboration.

This renewed pledge was the highlight of a strategic meeting between NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), and newly deployed US-DEA Country Attaché, Ms. Daphne Morrison, at the Agency’s national headquarters in Abuja on Friday, May 23, 2025.

During the visit, Ms. Morrison, who described the partnership as one of her top operational priorities in Nigeria, lauded the NDLEA for its unwavering dedication to combating drug crimes. “Thank you so much for your support over the years. I know you’ve been working well with my predecessor. I’m excited to continue the momentum and to do some really great things together,” she said.

She further hinted at upcoming capacity-building programmes for NDLEA’s Special Operations Units and joint enforcement exercises aimed at dismantling transnational drug cartels.DEA

On his part, Brig. Gen. Marwa expressed optimism about deeper collaboration, referencing the Agency’s transformative journey over the past few years. “We’ve grown significantly in personnel strength and operational capacity. Our drug supply and demand reduction strategies are yielding unprecedented results. The DEA’s support—through equipment, training, and intelligence—has been instrumental,” he said.

Marwa emphasized that while this initial meeting was more about solidifying ties than making demands, the agency would continue to welcome deeper engagement with the DEA to consolidate gains and confront emerging threats in narcotics control.DEA

As both agencies signal a stronger and more tactical alliance, the global drug underworld may face steeper odds in their operations across West Africa and beyond.
