The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its fight against drug trafficking, achieving a series of significant arrests and seizures across the country.
The agency’s operatives at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano, intercepted 256 wraps of cocaine weighing 6 kilograms on Sunday, December 15, 2024. The contraband, concealed on the body of Olisaka Chibuzo Calistus, an import and export businessman, arrived on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 941 from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This seizure marks the largest cocaine interception at the Kano airport since the NDLEA established its MAKIA Command in 2006.

In another operation, NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, foiled an attempt by ex-convict Olanrewaju Bada Akorede to smuggle rohypnol to South Africa. Akorede, previously convicted for attempting to export tramadol and rohypnol, was apprehended while hiding the drugs in a cargo shipment containing food items and clothing.
On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, an Italy-based businesswoman, Cynthia Akaeen, was arrested at the Lagos airport while attempting to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Italy. A total of 9,190 tablets of tramadol weighing 6 kilograms were found in her possession. She confessed to being promised €1,000 for delivering the consignment.
NDLEA operations extended beyond airports, with a warehouse raid at a building materials market in Onitsha, Anambra State, yielding 418,330 pills of tramadol and 8,000 bottles of codeine syrup on December 17. Similarly, a joint operation at Tincan Island Port, Lagos, uncovered 180,000 bottles of codeine syrup concealed in a container from Mundra, India. The consignee, Makata Emmanuel, was arrested.

In Borno State, multiple arrests were made, including Ishaya Wabba, 54, and Samaila Audu, 44, found with 293,000 tramadol capsules, a pistol, and 26 live rounds of ammunition. Another suspect, Sanusi Abdul Hamid, was apprehended with 260,000 tramadol capsules, while Modu Kolera, 35, was nabbed in Maiduguri with 8.5 kilograms of cannabis and other psychoactive substances.
Across Oyo, Enugu, and Lagos, the agency seized significant quantities of cannabis, ephedrine, and other drugs, disrupting distribution networks.
The NDLEA also continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign with sensitization activities in schools, religious centers, and workplaces nationwide. Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, commended the agency’s personnel for their diligence and urged them to sustain the momentum in curbing drug supply and demand.

These coordinated operations underscore NDLEA’s unwavering commitment to eliminating drug trafficking and abuse, ensuring a safer Nigeria.
