In a series of coordinated intelligence-led operations that spanned Nigeria’s ports, airports, forests, and highways, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted illicit drugs worth over Six Billion Five Hundred and Twenty-Four Million Naira (N6,524,000,000.00) in one of the agency’s biggest weekly hauls to date.
The seizures, made between May 15 and May 24, 2025, cut across the Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Onne, Rivers State; the Apapa Seaport in Lagos; the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos; and other major trafficking corridors across seven states.
Acting on actionable intelligence and new surveillance strategies, NDLEA operatives at the Onne Port uncovered two containers loaded with over six million pills of powerful opioids, Tamol 225mg, Tapentadol 225mg, and Carisoprodol 225mg, along with 162,000 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup on May 19 and 20, during a joint inspection with Customs and other security agencies.
In a similar operation at the Apapa Seaport on May 22, a container previously flagged for examination yielded another 170,000 bottles of codeine syrup, smuggled in through a new route identified by the agency’s tracking units.
Meanwhile, at the MMIA in Lagos, a major transnational drug syndicate was dismantled on May 15 when 51.10kg of “Loud”, a potent strain of cannabis, was smuggled in by Mhizha Jordan Alexander Tatendra, a British citizen arriving from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.
NDLEA officers who had been tracking the courier allowed him through the security system under surveillance and pounced as he was delivering the consignment to a waiting SUV at the airport parking lot. Arrested alongside Alexander were his alleged British-Nigerian contact, Ayedipe Andrew Adejuwon, and two other Nigerian accomplices: Shonowo Oluwaseun Imole and Ofuoma Omokaro Ayobami.
A follow-up raid at their Lekki apartment yielded #3.81 million in cash, 17,200 South African Rand, high-end electronics, and four laughing gas canisters, reinforcing concerns about the growing presence of synthetic and designer drugs in elite Lagos circles.
Beyond the ports and airport, NDLEA officers launched aggressive operations in other states: Cross River: 30 hectares of cannabis farms were destroyed at Esuk-Odot in Odukpani LGA, and 200kg of skunk was recovered.
*Edo: Over 1,957kgof cannabis was burned in forests at Ohosu and Okhuse. Nasarawa: 4,000kg of skunk was hidden under unprocessed timber and seized in Keffi, while another 154.5kg was recovered in Karu. Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Niger: Additional seizures included tramadol, diazepam, Colorado, and over 97kg of compressed cannabis in a luxury vehicle.
In Lekki, Lagos, NDLEA operatives raided Osapa London and Idasun communities, arresting suspects with dangerous assortments of drugs including Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Molly, Codeine, and Nitrous Oxide, popularly known as “laughing gas”.
While interdiction efforts intensify, NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) continued its advocacy with sensitization lectures across secondary schools in Katsina, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Adamawa, and Kano States. The Lagos Command also paid a courtesy advocacy visit to the Sarkin Fulani of Lagos, Alhaji Muhammadu Bambado, as part of efforts to build community-based resistance to drug abuse.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, praised the efforts of officers in the PHPC, Apapa, MMIA, Lagos, Cross River, Edo, Nasarawa, Niger, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Yobe Commands for their swift actions and successful seizures.
