In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted large consignments of codeine-based syrup and Loud, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis, worth over N2.18 billion in street value. The seizures occurred at the Port Harcourt seaports, Onne, and Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, with coordinated efforts from NDLEA operatives and other security agencies.
At Lagos airport, on Friday, May 31, 2024, NDLEA officers, in collaboration with other security agencies, intercepted a large consignment of Loud packed in eight suitcases containing 320 parcels, totaling 164.50kg. The consignment, valued at N960 million, arrived from Canada on a KLM flight via Amsterdam. The suspect, Ughenu Nnaife Francis, was caught attempting to smuggle the suitcases out of the E-arrival hall. Preliminary investigations revealed that Francis, a resident of Germany, had traveled to Toronto, Canada, to transport the drugs to Nigeria. He admitted to being recruited as a mule for a fee of #6 million.
In Port Harcourt, on Monday, May 27, NDLEA operatives intercepted a container marked TEMU 6807401, imported from India, at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex. A joint examination by NDLEA, Customs, and other security agencies uncovered 1,750 cartons of codeine weighing 26,250kg and containing 175,000 bottles of the opioid, with a street value of N1.225 billion.
Other notable arrests include Blessing Thomas, a 25-year-old woman, apprehended with 1kg of methamphetamine while traveling from Lagos to Yola, Adamawa state, along the Kwali-Gwagwalada expressway on May 31. In Nasarawa state, on May 29, a 70-year-old man, Muhammadu Ibrahim, was nabbed with 57.2kg of cannabis in Lafia. Additionally, in Ekiti state, NDLEA officers raided Ara forest on May 30, arresting Suleiman Kazeem, 35, and Sunday Gbenga, 20, and seizing 426kg of processed cannabis while destroying over 4,000kg on a 1.66-hectare farmland.
In Katsina state, on May 29, 76 blocks of cannabis weighing 42kg were seized from Suleman Audu, a 29-year-old Nigerien, along the Zaria-Malumfashi road.
Recovered Drugs
The NDLEA also continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities across the country, engaging schools, worship centers, workplaces, and communities. Recent WADA programs included lectures at Community Secondary School in Awka, Anambra state; All Saints Church School in Ibadan, Oyo state; Western Marine College in Badagry, Lagos; and Government Girls Secondary School in Bichi, Kano state.
Suspects
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), NDLEA Chairman/CEO, commended the officers for their diligent efforts, which have significantly reduced the availability of illicit substances in Nigerian communities. He urged them to maintain their vigilance and continue collaborating with other agencies and stakeholders.
