The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in its fight against drug trafficking, with multiple high-profile arrests and major seizures across the country.

On Wednesday, 20th November 2024, NDLEA operatives intercepted 50-year-old businessman Osuoha Christian Iheanacho at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA) in Enugu, after he was found to have ingested 90 wraps of cocaine. The suspect, who operates a phone and accessories business in Lagos and Gabon, was traveling from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Lagos and had deliberately taken a complex route to avoid detection.NDLEA
After a period of excretion observation, he expelled 2.019 kilograms of cocaine in seven separate excretions. Iheanacho admitted to turning to drug trafficking to fund his struggling business. He had been under surveillance for several months before his arrest.
In another operation on Thursday, 21st November, NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit arrested 42-year-old Ndive Maxwell Obinna, a cocaine cartel leader, and five associates in Okota, Lagos. A total of 2.412 kilograms of cocaine were recovered during the operation. Other members of the syndicate arrested include Okeke Gloria Ifeoma (stash keeper), Ikechebelu Emmanuel Chibuzor, Okorie Onyedikachi, Okonkwo Nnabugo Prince, and Okafor Blessing Anita.NDLEA
The NDLEA also dismantled a transnational drug syndicate led by 58-year-old Chinese national Tianzhen Yen. The suspect, known as Jackie, was arrested in Ikeja, Lagos, following an investigation that started with the arrest of Yakubu Emmanuel Mark, who was found with 750 grams of cocaine at the Seme border. Yen’s hotel room yielded further evidence, including cocaine, methamphetamine, weighing scales, and a Chinese National ID card.
At the Tincan seaport in Lagos, a joint operation on Friday, 22nd November led to the seizure of 92 parcels of Loud cannabis, weighing 23.25 kilograms, hidden in two vehicles from Canada. Additionally, the Port Harcourt Ports complex in Rivers state saw the interception of two containers with a staggering street value of N4.3 billion, including 168,000 bottles of codeine syrup and millions of tramadol pills.

The agency’s operations extended beyond major cities, with several arrests in Ekiti, Oyo, Edo, Kano, and Bauchi states, resulting in the seizure of over 1,200 kilograms of cannabis and various other illegal substances. In Ekiti, a physically challenged woman, Mustapha Boja, was arrested with cannabis, while in Edo, large-scale cannabis seizures were made, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects.
NDLEA’s efforts also included widespread sensitization programs through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, targeting schools, communities, and workplaces across the nation.NDLEA
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, praised the agency’s operatives for their diligence and success in curbing the supply of illicit drugs. Marwa reiterated the importance of a balanced approach to both drug supply reduction and demand reduction.
