The Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the One-China Principle, describing the nation’s position on Taiwan as a settled and non-negotiable matter of national policy.
The reaffirmation from NCSP comes amid renewed global attention on China’s long-standing position regarding Taiwan, following a high-level visit to Beijing by a United States delegation reportedly led by Donald Trump alongside some of America’s leading business executives.
The development once again brought the Taiwan question to the forefront of international diplomacy, as China maintained its position that the People’s Republic of China remains the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, while Taiwan is regarded as an inseparable part of its territory.
Nigeria’s diplomatic support for the One-China Principle dates back over five decades to the estabt of diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1971. The position was further reinforced during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing in 2024, where both countries issued a joint statement reaffirming Nigeria’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the only legal government representing all of China and expressing support for China’s pursuit of national reunification.
According to the NCSP, Nigeria’s consistent diplomatic reliability continues to serve as a strong foundation for expanding strategic economic cooperation with China, particularly in the areas of manufacturing investment, industrialization, export-oriented production and technology transfer, in line with Nigeria’s status as Africa’s largest economy.
Director-General of the NCSP, Joseph Tegbe, stated that China has already played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s railway systems, port infrastructure, energy projects, telecommunications networks and industrial capacity. He noted that the partnership is now expected to evolve further into critical sectors such as the digital economy, solid minerals development, agro-processing and consumer markets to ensure a more productive and balanced economic relationship between both nations.
The NCSP reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral collaboration with China across trade, infrastructure, investment, technology transfer and capacity building, stressing that the ultimate objective remains the delivery of measurable and tangible economic value to Nigeria and its people.
Also present at the engagement was the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, who joined discussions aimed at advancing the growing strategic cooperation between both countries.
