Ahead of the November 16 Ondo governorship election, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Agboola Alfred Ajayi, has promised to harness the state’s natural resources to bring prosperity, belonging, and democratic dividends to residents if elected.
Speaking to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) at his Akure residence, Ajayi condemned the pervasive poverty plaguing the nation, emphasizing that all Nigerians are affected by the current economic hardship.
Chief Agboola Alfred Ajayi shared his personal encounters with poverty as an illustration of the issue’s severity. “I receive over 50 messages daily from people requesting help, for basic needs like school fees and food,” he said, adding that he’s frequently compelled to assist, even when he doesn’t personally know the individuals. He described a recent video depicting Lagosians pushing each other for free bread, highlighting how such scenes reflect the nation’s steep economic decline.
The PDP flagbearer criticized Nigeria’s dependency on limited economic hubs like Lagos and proposed a plan to transform Ondo’s economy by tapping into the state’s vast but underutilized resources. “Ondo is sitting on wealth—gold, oil, and a strategic coastline. We have resources that could rival Lagos if properly developed,” Ajayi said, outlining his intention to build a seaport in Ondo’s Ilaje Local Government Area. This project, he suggested, would decongest Lagos, create thousands of jobs, and boost commerce within the state.
PDP’s Ajayi urged Ondo voters to consider his vision, noting that his background and extensive network position him to achieve real change. “We need someone with vision, contacts, and a deep understanding of the terrain to unlock our potential. Ondo deserves a leader who can take actionable steps,” he explained to NAOSNP.
The NAOSNP delegation, led by its President, Mr. Oki O. Samson, expressed appreciation for Ajayi’s hospitality, acknowledging his commitment to addressing security challenges in the election. “Our association is here to evaluate the security landscape in Ondo to help ensure a peaceful election,” Samson explained, adding that they plan to meet with other stakeholders and security agencies to assess preparations for the upcoming vote.
