In a landmark move aimed at advancing STEM education and fostering technological innovation in Nigeria, Moniepoint has played a pivotal role in boosting the Mechanical Engineering Department of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The unveiling of the Tosin Eniolorunda Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) laboratory marks a significant milestone for the institution and the future of engineering education in Nigeria.
This philanthropic gesture, aligned with Moniepoint’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) ethos, is expected to significantly bolster Nigeria’s science and technology foundation. By making subjects like prototyping, design, and general engineering more accessible and engaging for students, the laboratory is poised to transform the learning experience. With the global tech industry booming, stakeholders stress that investing in STEM education is crucial to driving socio-economic development in Nigeria and across Africa.
According to a recent survey, fewer than 25% of African students pursue STEM careers, despite a growing population where over 60% are under 25. This makes Moniepoint’s intervention timely and essential. The unveiling ceremony saw the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, express deep gratitude for the generous contribution made by Tosin Eniolorunda, co-founder of Moniepoint and an alumnus of OAU’s Mechanical Engineering Department.
“We are extremely grateful for this laboratory, especially as the lack of funds has left many universities grappling with infrastructural challenges,” Professor Bamire said. “This state-of-the-art lab will greatly improve the livelihoods of our students and staff, fostering collaboration between academia and industry. We encourage other alumni to emulate this culture of giving back.”
Tosin Eniolorunda echoed the sentiment, noting, “This newly revamped lab is not just an upgrade—it’s a personal commitment to nurturing a generation of engineers and innovators. By investing in STEM education, we are laying the foundation for future leaders, innovators, and changemakers in Nigeria.”
The laboratory’s upgrade includes cutting-edge resources such as high-performance computers, interactive electronic boards, sustainable power solutions, and advanced cooling systems. These facilities will provide hands-on experience for students, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Prof. Lasisi Umoru, emphasized that the revamped facility would enhance research capabilities, improve employability in global markets, and serve as a model for STEM education across Nigeria.
The commissioning ceremony, covered by Fasnewsng.com, attracted distinguished guests, including senior officials from the university and beyond. Among them were Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. M. Babalola, DVC (Administration) Prof. Adaramola, and Special Assistant to the Osun State Governor on ICT, Sola Isola.
Moniepoint, OAU collaborative effort, centred on advancing STEM education, signals a brighter future for engineering and technological innovation in Nigeria.
