The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has described the donation of a newly built canine facility to the Agency by the German government as a major boost to Nigeria’s fight against illicit drugs.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the new dog complex in Ikeja Lagos on Friday 26th September 2025, Marwa commended the German government for its unwavering support to NDLEA over the years. He noted that the quality of the infrastructure at the new facility speaks volumes about the commitment, goodwill, and tenacity of Germany as a strategic partner in Nigeria’s anti-drug campaign.

“May I assure all stakeholders that the provision of this facility will significantly drive our fight against illicit drugs, fulfil our core mandate and secure the future of our nation,” Marwa said.NDLEA

The NDLEA boss recalled how the Agency’s Canine Unit contributed to remarkable operations such as the seizure of 74.119kg of captagon at the Apapa seaport in 2021, stressing that the new complex would further enhance the capacity of personnel and sniffer dogs to intercept narcotic substances across airports, seaports, land borders, courier service centres, and transport hubs.

Highlighting the importance of canines to the Agency’s success, Marwa revealed that sniffer dogs have been instrumental to the seizure of over 17.932 metric tonnes of illicit drugs. He added that the new infrastructure will provide a dignified working environment that motivates handlers and strengthens operational excellence.

German Consul General in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Krull, commended the NDLEA’s performance under Marwa’s leadership, noting that its achievements benefit not only Nigeria but also Germany and the wider region. “The success of NDLEA’s operation is not only keeping Nigeria safe but also of great benefit to Germany,” Krull said. He further emphasized trust as the most important currency in international cooperation.NDLEA

Also speaking, Mr. Florian Bulow, deputy head of section IZ14 BKA, Berlin, described the partnership between Germany and the NDLEA as one of the longest-reaching projects in police capacity building. He likened the collaboration to a marriage built on love, trust, shared goals, and teamwork, all of which have made the relationship productive and enduring.

Marwa, on his part, expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Krull, the Liaison Office of the German Federal Criminal Police, and their colleagues in Berlin, Saxony, and Sachsen-Anhalt for their efforts in making the project a reality.
