Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said fatal accident occurred on Monday along the Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora 7Up, when a 40-foot container truck with registration number XP 368 AKD overturned onto a commercial tricycle, killing two passengers instantly.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck, fully laden with goods, was attempting a risky maneuver beneath the Ijora Bridge when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to capsize and crush the tricycle in its path. Among the victims was a serving police officer, while the second deceased was a female passenger.
The remains of the police officer were later taken to a morgue in Yaba by security operatives, while relatives of the female passenger retrieved her body from the scene.
In a joint rescue effort led by LASTMA operatives, two survivors, including the tricycle operator, were pulled out alive but with serious injuries, notably severe bilateral leg fractures. They were immediately rushed by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to Jimsan Hospital, Gasikiya, Ijora, for urgent medical attention.
To prevent mob action, police units from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri divisions mounted tight security around the scene. Their presence calmed angry onlookers who had attempted to set the container truck ablaze and ensured the safety of rescue workers.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a tragic and painful loss. He also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured and commended the combined emergency and security agencies for their professionalism and swift intervention.
Bakare-Oki further urged articulated vehicle operators to exercise maximum caution, particularly when navigating bridges, intersections, and crowded corridors, stressing that such care was crucial to preventing avoidable tragedies.
