Ahead of the Ondo State off-cycle governorship election, the International Press Centre (IPC) and the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) are set to commence a series of dialogues and stakeholder engagements.
The IPC, CEMESO events, scheduled to begin tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, aim to foster a fair, ethical, and inclusive coverage of the electoral process by the media, while also promoting peaceful conduct among citizens.
The initiative by IPC and CEMESO comes at a crucial time as political activities in Ondo State continue to gain momentum. As the countdown to the governorship election begins, the two organizations emphasize the importance of ethical journalism, responsible reporting, and accurate information dissemination. The dialogues and stakeholder engagements will provide a platform for media professionals, civil society organizations, and other relevant stakeholders to collaborate on upholding these standards.

Addressing journalists ahead of the event, Lanre Arogundade, Executive Director of IPC, underscored the role of the media in shaping public perception and maintaining peace during elections. “The media plays a vital role in the electoral process, and it is essential that coverage is fair, accurate, and does not incite violence or hate speech. Our aim with these engagements is to ensure the media adheres to these principles,” he said.
CEMESO’s Executive Director, Ayo Aluko-Olokun, also stressed the need for collaboration between the media, electoral bodies, and citizens to ensure a credible election. He noted that the series of dialogues would serve as a foundation for building trust and cooperation among these groups. “We believe that constructive engagement is key to a successful electoral process. Our dialogue sessions will encourage stakeholders to discuss concerns and work together toward a peaceful election,” Aluko-Olokun stated.
The series of dialogues will feature panel discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions, focusing on topics such as media ethics, conflict-sensitive reporting, and the role of digital media in election coverage. Participants will include journalists, representatives from political parties, security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and civil society organizations. The engagements will take place in various locations across Ondo State, ensuring widespread participation and impact.
