The 2025 Ojude Oba Festival, a cherished cultural showcase of the Ijebu people, was marred by controversy this year, as prominent voices within the community sharply rebuked Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for allegedly politicising the sacred event and encroaching on royal traditions.
Traditionally a colourful post-Eid celebration that unites indigenes and tourists alike in honour of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, this year’s festivities were overshadowed by what many described as an unsettling deviation from protocol.
At the centre of the storm is the governor’s decision to assume ceremonial duties typically reserved for the monarch or his official representatives, most notably, receiving and greeting the various (regberegbe) age-grade groups.
“It is not the governor’s place to conduct such rites,” said a respected elder from the community. “He is welcome as a guest and dignitary, but the cultural leadership of Ojude Oba belongs solely to the Awujale. This attempt to assume that role is not just inappropriate, it is an affront to our tradition.”
While the absence of the Awujale was officially attributed to health concerns, sources close to the palace suggest a deeper, more troubling reason: a silent protest against what the monarch allegedly views as the governor’s growing interference in Ijebu affairs and the delicate balance between the Ijebu and Remo blocs.
“The Kabiyesi is not pleased with the governor’s handling of political matters affecting the Ijebu people, especially regarding the long-standing agitation for the creation of Ijebu State,” a palace insider revealed. “This administration’s actions have created a rift where there was once unity.”
Observers noted that under past administrations, the Ojude Oba Festival was spared from political overtones and maintained its cultural sanctity. However, this year’s event—intended to reflect harmony, heritage, and communal pride—became a stage for political tension.
A community leader, speaking anonymously, echoed the growing sentiment: “We are not against any government. But Ojude Oba must remain sacred. It is not a platform for self-promotion or political manoeuvring. If we allow this precedent, what becomes of our heritage?”
The calls for restraint and respect have since intensified, with many urging Governor Abiodun to focus on fostering unity rather than division, and to allow traditional institutions the full dignity they command.
As the dust settles on this year’s festival, the hope among Ijebu indigenes is clear: that future editions of Ojude Oba will remain untainted by political ambitions and true to the cultural values that have sustained it for generations.

The summit, held at the University of Oxford in the UK and supported by UN Human Rights (OHCHR), aims to reframe climate change as a human rights crisis and spotlight climate solutions. It works with everyone from policymakers to artists to get the message across.

Coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5, the exhibition — titled “Photography 4 Humanity: A Lens on Climate Justice” — features the work of 31 photographers from across the globe, all documenting the effects of global warming and environmental pollution on their own communities.
Climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations around the world. Despite emitting far fewer greenhouse gases, low-income nations are suffering the most from extreme weather events and have fewer resources to adapt or recover.
Photographs at the exhibition show the effects of desertification, flooding and plastic pollution. A black and white image shows the ruins of a house in West Bengal, India, sloping towards the Ganges River, with the owner sitting alongside. Riverbank erosion is degrading the environment and displacing communities in the area. Photographer Masood Sarwer said in a press release that the photo depicts the “slow violence” of climate change: “These are not sudden disasters, but slow-moving, relentless ones — shaping a new category of environmental refugees.”
Another photo, taken by Aung Chan Thar, shows children fishing for trash in Inle Lake, Myanmar. The lake was once a pristine natural wonder but now faces the growing threat of plastic pollution. “This image of children cleaning the water symbolizes the importance of education and collective action in preserving our environment for a sustainable future,” he said.
Organizers hope that the exhibition will help to humanize the climate crisis. “Our mission is to inspire new perspectives through photography,” said Pauline Benthede, global vice president of artistic direction and exhibitions at Fotografiska, the museum of photography, art and culture that is curating the exhibition at the summit. “It draws attention to the human rights issue at the heart of global warming, which affects both the world’s landscapes and the people that live within them.”
“Photography is the most influential and inclusive art form of our times and has the power to foster understanding and inspire action,” she added.
