The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division of the Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South South), Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, has reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering commitment to the safety and security of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to the Niger Delta region.
He gave the assurance on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, at the 6 Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, when he received the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, and his entourage on a courtesy visit.
Major General Emekah, reflecting on his personal connection with the NYSC, described the scheme as “home,” recalling that his former Head of Department at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Brigadier General Shofoluwe, once served as the DG of the NYSC and played a pivotal role in shaping his career.
In a heartfelt tribute, he congratulated Brigadier General Nafiu on his appointment as DG NYSC, describing it as a perfect match for the role. “He is a round peg in a round hole,” Emekah stated, affirming his confidence in the DG’s leadership, professionalism, and deep understanding of the scheme’s objectives. He urged the DG to maintain a spirit of consultation, especially with past leaders of the scheme, to sustain its legacy and strengthen its impact.
Brigadier General Nafiu, in his remarks, thanked the GOC for the warm reception and extended appreciation to the Nigerian Army for its longstanding support to the NYSC, particularly within the Niger Delta. He praised the role of the 6 Division in consistently providing instructors for camp training, securing corps members, and accommodating them during service.
Highlighting the NYSC’s enduring relevance, Nafiu noted that the scheme has remained a pillar of national integration for over 52 years. He clarified that any Nigerian graduate who finished before the age of 30 remains eligible to serve, even if they are now over 50, emphasizing the scheme’s inclusive and patriotic spirit.
The visit underscored the mutual respect and collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the NYSC, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to youth development, national unity, and operational synergy within the region.
