Enugu State Panel has commenced a public sitting on the petitions submitted on Police Brutality and Extra-Judicial Killings yesterday, Monday, 16th November, 2020.
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 inaugurated an 8-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry which was constituted by his administration to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality and other related extra judicial killings in the state.
At the hearing of the Enugu state panel taking place at Court 3, the Chairman of the panel, Hon. Justice Kingsley Ude (Rtd) agreed to the suggestion made by the Enugu Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barr. Jude Ezegwi, that the list of all the cases and hearing be published to enable petitioners know when to appear before the panel.
Justice Ude (Rtd) also announced that thirty (30) petitions have been received by the Enugu Division and are yet to ascertain the numbers of petitions collected by other Divisions that are also accepting petitions.
He also announced that the panel will continue to accept petition from the public until February, 2021 to give enough time for submissions. He added that because there is no dedicated Court for the sittings, they will be sitting only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Barr. Jude Ezegwi disclosed that the Lawyers in the state have organized a dedicated team of Lawyers coordinated by Barr. Nnadiume Awforkansi (Chairman Ezeagu Bar) to offer free legal services to anyone that maybe requiring same.
