In a swift and well-coordinated emergency operation, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in the early hours of Monday prevented what could have been a devastating fire disaster after a gas-laden Howo tanker truck overturned along the main carriageway at Chisco, before the traffic light inward Victoria Island.
Preliminary reports revealed that the accident occurred when the driver, conveying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinders, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn on the busy expressway. Given the highly volatile content, the incident posed an immediate threat to lives and property, requiring rapid intervention.
On arrival, LASTMA personnel swiftly cordoned off the area, securing the truck and its CNG load to avert possible leakage or ignition. The agency’s Rescue and Emergency Unit promptly activated a multi-agency response, mobilizing the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lekki Concession Company (LCC), Nigeria Police Force, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to contain the situation.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who was at the scene, commended the professionalism and precision displayed by his officers and supporting agencies. He said,
“Our officers acted with remarkable discipline and courage. Their quick action prevented an unspeakable tragedy. The recovery was executed under the highest safety standards to eliminate any residual risk.”
Heavy-duty cranes and recovery equipment were deployed to lift the overturned tanker, while additional LASTMA personnel managed traffic and ensured the safety of commuters. Motorists were temporarily diverted through the coastal road via Bar Beach until the route was cleared and reopened.
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized that the incident highlights the **need for strict adherence to road safety rules, especially by drivers transporting hazardous materials. He cautioned that products such as gas, petrol, diesel, and kerosene must be handled with extreme care to avoid catastrophic incidents.
Reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safety, he assured that LASTMA will continue to uphold the highest standards of traffic discipline and emergency coordination to ensure a Greater, Safer, and More Resilient Lagos.
