The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), on Saturday commissioned the Renewed Hope International Market in Ìgodè, Sagamu Local Government Area, while using the occasion to restate his unflinching support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its ongoing economic reforms.
The event, which doubled as the Midterm Community Assessment and Review Tour of the BATOGD Movement, drew stakeholders, community leaders, and residents who trooped out to witness what Senator Daniel described as “the opening up of one of our hinterlands, putting Ìgodè Town and its surrounding villages on the development map of Ogun State.”
Highlighting his motivation, Daniel explained that his political engagements are anchored on needs assessments during electioneering, followed by periodic feedback visits to communities. He noted that the commissioning of the market was in fulfillment of promises made to the people.
On national issues, the former governor praised President Tinubu for showing courage in addressing difficult economic questions, citing the removal of fuel subsidy and reforms in foreign exchange policy as bold moves that have reduced scarcity and stabilized the market. He further pointed to initiatives like the Students’ Loan Scheme as aligning with his own long-standing commitment to human capital development through scholarships, bursaries, and skills empowerment.
Daniel recalled that his Gateway Front Foundation (GFF) has supported thousands of students and entrepreneurs over the past 25 years, while also investing in free healthcare initiatives, including partnerships with Emzor and Eye Foundation that have delivered over 3,000 successful cataract surgeries at no cost to beneficiaries.
The Senator also updated constituents on key interventions, including:
Support for more than 5,000 petty traders and artisans through interest-free loans and empowerment tools.
Ongoing development of a Naval Base at Abigi/Makun-Omi, which he said is transforming into a “naval city” with quarters, schools, and hospitals.
His aviation vision through the Agro-Cargo Airport and Aviation School at Akaka Remo, which will become only the second such institution in Nigeria after Zaria.
He restated his push for the creation of a new state out of the old Ijebu Province, confirming that 75 senators have already endorsed the proposal. He also assured the people that the South West Development Commission Bill, which he introduced, is already receiving attention at the national level.
Calling for complementary action from the state government, Daniel appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to tar the road leading to Ìgodè, stressing that improved access would unlock the full economic potential of the new market.
“This commissioning could have been held in a bigger town with better roads, but we chose Ìgodè for strategic reasons. We appeal to the state government to do the needful so that this market can serve its full purpose,” Daniel said.
The Senator concluded by reaffirming his unwavering political alignment with President Tinubu, describing their three-decade-old relationship as a bond forged in shared democratic ideals and governance experiences.
