In what experts are calling a game-changing move for Nigeria’s energy sector, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has launched a bold new initiative involving the direct distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and diesel to major users across the country, completely eliminating the need for intermediaries.

This strategic intervention, which includes free logistics support and the deployment of 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers, is expected to slash petroleum product costs, ease inflation, boost employment, and promote environmental sustainability.

The refinery’s direct-to-consumer delivery targets a broad range of sectors, including petrol dealers, manufacturers, telecoms firms, the aviation industry, and other high-volume users, while also extending access to underserved communities in rural areas.

Dr. Abimbola Oyarinu, a university lecturer and public affairs analyst, hailed the initiative as a potential end to the longstanding dominance of tanker drivers and other middlemen in the petroleum distribution chain. “These intermediaries have, on numerous occasions, held the country hostage, even the NNPCL was not spared. Dangote’s model has the capacity to break this cycle. But ultimately, Nigerians will judge it by how it impacts fuel prices and inflation,” he said.Dangote

Echoing his sentiment, analyst Ibukun Phillips described the rollout as an “energy revolution,” highlighting that logistics alone account for up to 30% of fuel pricing. “By absorbing this cost, Dangote is setting the stage for more affordable fuel, particularly in rural areas where prices are disproportionately high. This could also revive dormant filling stations and stimulate economic activity in those regions,” she noted.

The Dangote ambitious project is also set to create no fewer than 8,000 driving jobs, underscoring its potential to reduce unemployment and enhance nationwide fuel accessibility.

As the country awaits full implementation, many see this initiative as a crucial step toward reshaping Nigeria’s energy distribution model, with wide-reaching implications for the economy and everyday Nigerians.
