The 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) Dangote Refinery has been hailed as a groundbreaking project that will drive Africa towards economic transformation and poverty eradication. This was the assertion of Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, during his visit to the refinery located in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos State, over the weekend.
Dr. Chambas, who also serves as Chairman of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, described the refinery as a symbol of African entrepreneurship, praising Aliko Dangote’s foresight in bringing the project to fruition. According to him, the refinery represents a significant shift in Africa’s economic landscape.
“I believe these are the types of transformational projects that will propel Africa out of poverty. The Dangote Refinery creates jobs, spurs growth in both national and regional economies, and provides cheaper, reliable fuel for transportation, agriculture, and industries. In short, it drives the real economy. The Dangote Group is leading the way for the private sector in Africa, which has a crucial role in the fight against poverty and in creating opportunities for the youth. This is a veritable pathway to silencing the guns,” Chambas said.

The former President of ECOWAS commended Dangote for his “business acumen, courage, tenacity, and vision,” stating that his leadership has cemented him as a true icon in Africa’s private sector. The refinery, he noted, would not only impact Nigeria but also serve as a catalyst for the entire continent’s economic growth.
Dr. Chambas also praised President Bola Tinubu for his strategic decision to ensure a steady supply of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery. “President Bola Tinubu, with his rich background in the private sector, understands the challenges faced by entrepreneurs. His commitment to providing an enabling environment for businesses in Nigeria, especially for a project of this magnitude, is commendable,” he said.
He urged Africans across the continent and the diaspora to visit the refinery, highlighting the hope and potential it embodies for Africa’s future. “A visit to the Dangote Refinery offers a glimpse into the boundless opportunities that lie ahead for not just Nigeria, but the entire African continent,” he added.
