Joy and celebration filled the air at Idotun Community Junior High School in Lekki on Thursday as Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, in collaboration with Dangote Fertilisers Limited, awarded scholarships to 473 students from 10 secondary schools and 7 tertiary institutions.
Additionally, the company donated 804 tables and chairs to schools in their host communities in Ibeju-Lekki.
The event, part of the 5th Edition of the Dangote Scholarship Award Programme, was a momentous occasion for students, parents, and community leaders. Scholarship certificates, textbooks, and notebooks were presented to beneficiaries, underscoring the company’s commitment to education and community development.
Devakumar Edwin, Group Vice President of Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries, described the initiative as a partnership with host communities to foster sustainable growth through education and innovation. “Education is the passport to the future,” Edwin stated, emphasizing that since its launch in 2019, the programme has grown from 56 beneficiaries to 450 in 2024, reflecting remarkable progress.
Edwin also highlighted the donation of classroom furniture as part of a broader commitment to creating a conducive learning environment. “This gesture ensures every child has the opportunity to grow, dream, and thrive,” he added.
Olayinka Akande, Managing Director of Dangote Industries Free Zone Development Company, urged beneficiaries to embody excellence, a core value of Dangote Industries, and aim for leadership roles. “Some of you could become governors, ministers, or captains of industry,” he said, inspiring the students to strive for greatness.
Ogunleye Mojisola, Head of Social Performance at Dangote Petroleum & Petrochemicals, noted that the education intervention is one of four pillars in the company’s Community Development Plan, which has consistently grown since its inception. “The increasing number of beneficiaries yearly proves the programme’s success in motivating academic excellence,” she remarked.
Chief Adewale Salami, representing the Oni of Lekki, lauded Dangote Industries for shaping the future of the community, while Alhaji Wasiu Ayeola, Chairman of the Lekki Coastal Area Development Association, praised Aliko Dangote for turning Lekki into a hub of opportunity. “Education is the key to shaping the future of our community,” Ayeola affirmed.
Beneficiaries, including Atibere Peter from Lagos State University and Dauda Omolara from Community Senior High School, expressed profound gratitude, stating that the scholarships would ease their financial burdens and inspire academic excellence.
The event marked another milestone in Dangote Industries’ mission to empower communities, nurture talent, and invest in the future. Through education, innovation, and opportunity, the company continues to shape a brighter tomorrow for the leaders of today.
