Dangote Donates N2 Billion to Support Maiduguri Flood Victims

In a significant show of support for flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) and the National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, has donated one billion Naira to aid those affected by the recent disaster.

The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR), also led by Dangote, matched this donation with an additional one billion Naira, bringing the total contribution to N2 billion.

During a visit to the flood-ravaged areas on Friday, Dangote, who also serves as the President of Dangote Industries Limited, expressed deep empathy for the victims. Describing the extent of the damage as “mindboggling,” he emphasized the urgent need for intervention, saying, “I have never seen a disaster of this magnitude before. The state needs help, and we are calling on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to support relief efforts, as the government cannot do it alone.”

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, expressed gratitude for Dangote’s continuous support, commending him for his prompt response to the crisis. He highlighted that Dangote has been instrumental in the state’s development, and urged other prominent Nigerians to follow his example in providing assistance to those in need.

The recent flood disaster in Maiduguri has displaced over one million residents and resulted in the tragic loss of 30 lives. As reported by fasnewsng.com, the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been actively involved in rescue operations. According to SEMA Director-General Barkindo Mohammed, over 3,600 people have been evacuated, and more efforts are ongoing to reach those still trapped.

SEMA has set up 14 official and several informal camps to house displaced persons, as authorities continue their relief efforts. Mohammed acknowledged the federal government’s contribution of N3 billion to the state, which, along with additional resources from Governor Zulum, is being used to assist both Maiduguri and other affected Local Government Areas.

This is not the first time the Dangote-led committee has responded to a national disaster. In December 2022, the PCFRR began distributing relief materials worth N1.5 billion to flood victims across the country. The committee, established in response to the 2012 flooding crisis, continues to provide crucial support to affected communities nationwide.
