The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced an unprecedented crackdown on the importation of illicit drugs at Lagos’s Tincan Island Port, marking a milestone in its anti-smuggling efforts.
The Tincan Island Port Command, in collaboration with several government agencies, unveiled the seizure of 16 containers carrying unregistered pharmaceutical products and illegal substances with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) estimated at a staggering ₦37 billion.
This operation, aligning with the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi’s vision of “Consolidation, Collaboration, and Innovation,” underscores the NCS’s commitment to maintaining Nigeria’s border security. According to a report by fasnewsng.com, the seized items include nearly two million bottles of codeine cough syrups, 341 kg of Cannabis Indica, and substantial quantities of controlled pharmaceuticals such as Tramadol, Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol, which are known for their high potential for abuse.

The Comptroller of Tincan Island Port, DA Nnadi, mni, attributed this landmark achievement to the dedication of Customs officers and the crucial support from allied agencies like the NDLEA, NAFDAC, Nigeria Police, and DSS. Addressing the press, he celebrated the record-breaking revenue generation of ₦1.046 trillion by the Command in 2024, marking a first in its history. “This is a clear testament to our stakeholders’ commitment to our reforms and compliance programs,” Nnadi stated, adding that compliant traders are rewarded with efficient processing and reduced delays.
The seized drugs, originating from countries including India, Canada, and the UK, were smuggled through vessels such as the SpilKartika and MSC Sweden VI. Notably, on October 2, NCS handed over 341 kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of ₦682 million to the NDLEA as part of its interagency collaboration. The Tincan Command has also pledged to transfer an additional 13 containers of unregistered pharmaceuticals to NAFDAC for further action.
As the yuletide season approaches, Nigeria Customs Service reassures compliant traders of seamless cargo clearance, while warning non-compliant actors of strict enforcement measures. “Our slogan this week is ‘Reform or Regret,’” Nnadi asserted, emphasizing the Command’s zero tolerance for illicit importations.

The Tincan Island Port Command’s accomplishments not only highlight the growing effectiveness of Nigeria’s Customs operations but also underscore the importance of enhanced partnerships across agencies to safeguard Nigeria’s borders.
