Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu has warmly welcomed the 21st indigenous Inspector-General of Police, Federal Republic of Nigeria, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, NPM, fdc, to Lagos State Police Command on his three (3) day working visit to Lagos State.
“It is my singular honour to felicitate with the IGP, IGP Usman Alkali Baba on behalf of the entire workforce of the Lagos State Police Command, on your appointment by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR and your confirmation as the 21st indigenous Inspector-General of Police by the Nigeria Police Council, on Thursday 10th June, 2021. Once again sir, congratulations,” He welcomed.
In his welcome address to the new IGP, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Hakeem Odumosu informed IGP Baba that it has been calm and relatively peaceful as crimes and criminality have been suppressed while most of the hoodlums and criminals who intend to raise their ugly heads have been arrested and prosecuted accordingly; and their leftovers, who are being frustrated as a result of Police proactive measures, are leaving the state.
“Generally, majorly noticeable crime waves in Lagos State are anchored on cultism, robbery in traffic, traffic congestion and gangsterism.
“However, with the anti crime strategies emplaced by the command, these menaces have been reduced to their barest minimum,” Odumosu Informed.
Lagos CP stated categorically that the command has not recorded any violent crimes, especially, Bank Robbery kidnapping, Banditry etc in the last 20 months.
“This invariably doesn’t suggest that the unscrupulous elements never attempted to strike in the state, but the proactive and effective policing measures established and being executed across the length and breadth of the state form the major obstacle that prevent them from actualizing their nefarious goals.
“As a short reflection, below is the statistics of major breakthroughs of the command.
In totality, the command was able to arrest Two Thousand, Two Hundred and Twenty Eight (2,228) suspects in connection with offences ranging from armed robbery, cultism, murder, hooliganism and defilement/rape in the state, while Eighty Seven (87) arms and One Hundred and Twenty Nine (129) ammunition of various calibres were recovered. In addition, Thirty Six (36) stolen vehicles were recovered by the command within the period under review,” He analysed

CP Odumosu also briefly referred to the October 2020 violent “ENDSARS PROTEST“ that was orchestrated by certain individuals and groups in the country to incapacitate police security network and disrupt the country’s national unity and peace.
“This singular crisis, under whatever disguise or nomenclature, left blood, sorrow and pains as many properties, both public and private, were massively destroyed and some Nigerians lost their lives including our Police officers and men. In Lagos State, we lost 6 personnel, 16 Police stations and 13 Police posts were set ablaze. Similarly 106 Police personnel were injured while 62 patrol vehicles were burnt and some vandalized,” Odumosu pointed out.
Appreciating the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for its commitment and fatherly roles played to compensate and restore lives back to the police families that suffered the largest loss during the crisis,Odumosu noted that despite the trauma experienced by policemen during the violent crisis, they were never deterred or discouraged from discharging their duties as expected; rather, the general security of Lagos State has been so unneutralized and impenetrable.
He thereafter passionately appealed to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba to assist the Command in facilitating the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Police Stations and barracks that were burnt and vandalized during the 2020 violent ENDSARS protest in the state to enable the displaced families be accommodated.
Furthermore, CP Odumosu requested that the Command will appreciate the support of the Inspector-general of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba in the areas of providing a large quantity of smoke/canisters, smoke gunners, body armors, tracking devices, indoor ranges, personal-defense kits like pepper sprays, tasers, stun guns and lots more.
Lastly, Odumosu specially appreciated the good people and Government of Lagos State, under the amiable Leadership of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, for their love, supports, commitment and steadfastness in ensuring that the command remains effective and reliable in the course of providing adequate security for all and sundry in the state.
“I specially appreciate the leadership of governor of Lagos state, and in the vein, the Command can never be thankful enough for the IGP’s fatherly guidance, provision of crime fighting equipment and professional ideas to the state command.
“These however have been invaluable assets which have been and shall continue to be the guiding principles for the Command in combating crimes and criminality in the state. We are most grateful sir.
“I wish to reassure the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba and his management team of the command’s unalloyed supports and loyalty to succeed in his committed fight against insecurity; and to reposition the Nigeria police Force through modern scientific Policing equipment and reinvigorated strategies as contained in the IGP’s 12-point agenda,” Odumosu concluded
