In a landmark ruling that underscores Nigeria’s commitment to eradicating illicit drug trafficking, the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, October 23, sentenced 41-year-old Canadian national, Adrienne Munju to 11 years in prison for importing 74 parcels of “Canadian Loud,” a high-potency synthetic cannabis strain, into Nigeria.
The conviction comes after her arrest at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, by officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on October 3, as she attempted to smuggle 35.20 kilograms of the illicit drug through customs.
Munju, who faced a two-count charge filed by the NDLEA, pleaded guilty before Justice Dehinde Dipeolu. During her arraignment, Munju confessed she had been recruited through an online platform, offered a substantial fee of 10,000 Canadian dollars, and accepted the deal to finance her master’s degree studies in Canada. However, her plans unraveled when vigilant NDLEA operatives intercepted her during the clearance of inbound passengers arriving on a KLM flight.

In court, NDLEA’s prosecuting counsel, Barrister Abu Ibrahim, presented irrefutable evidence, including Munju’s Canadian passport, her confessional statements, laboratory analyses, and the two suitcases used to hide the contraband. The court accepted all exhibits, marking a swift prosecution. Justice Dipeolu subsequently imposed an 11-year cumulative sentence on Munju, six years for one count and five for the other—with an alternative fine of N100 million if both fines on each count are fulfilled.
“This verdict serves as a powerful deterrent to foreign nationals and anyone tempted to bring illegal drugs into our nation,” NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) stated. He commended the NDLEA’s MMIA Strategic Command for their diligent work and the judiciary for swift action. Marwa added that such stringent measures reflect Nigeria’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug trafficking.
