The Human Rights Journalists Network Nigeria (HRJN) hosted senior management members of Amnesty International Nigeria at its Lagos office on Tuesday, signaling a renewed commitment to their shared mission of advancing human rights and press freedom in Nigeria.
The visiting team, led by Amnesty International Nigeria‘s Country Director, Isa Sanusi, emphasized collaboration on critical issues such as democratic governance, electoral integrity, law and order, and freedom of expression.
The HRJN leadership, represented by Executive Director Kehinde Adegboyega and Co-founder Blessing Oladunjoye, welcomed the Amnesty International delegation, including Bhavika Solanki, Civic Space and Governance Expert, and Mrs. Benedicta Ofili from the Abuja office. The HRJN delegation was further bolstered by board members like Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director at Media Career Development Network, and Olayide Akanni, Executive Director of Journalists Against AIDS, as well as members of its core team.

Speaking on the collaboration, Sanusi highlighted the challenging environment in which human rights defenders operate in Nigeria, noting the increasing pressures to silence activists and journalists. “Despite these challenges, organizations like HRJN have remained resolute in holding power accountable,” said Sanusi. He emphasized the importance of persistence and courage in advocating for the right to a dignified living standard, which fuels Amnesty International’s commitment to frontline advocacy both in Nigeria and globally.
Bhavika Solanki added her voice to the conversation, expressing admiration for the resilience of Nigerian civil society organizations and journalists facing harassment, arrests, and other forms of intimidation. She remarked that such courage is not unique to Nigeria but is shared by freedom fighters worldwide, who stand against undemocratic practices, even within democratically elected governments. “The only way to consolidate civil liberty and freedom globally is through unwavering collaboration,” she asserted.
HRJN’s Executive Director, Kehinde Adegboyega, outlined recent interventions by the network, including workshops aimed at sensitizing journalists and human rights defenders on the state surveillance program in Nigeria. He lamented the rising incidents of arbitrary arrests and intimidation, noting that the advocacy was conducted under the Digital Safety and Security Series, supported by Amnesty International Nigeria. He underscored the importance of solidarity among journalists to combat these growing threats.
The meeting served as a powerful reminder of the stakes involved in the ongoing struggle for human rights and democratic integrity in Nigeria. Both Amnesty International and HRJN reaffirmed their commitment to standing firm against any attempts to undermine the civic space and vowed to continue collaborating on initiatives that support press freedom and social justice activism.
